About Us

Wales has a coastline of over 1,600 kilometres, with a substantial amount covered by conservation designations. At the same time, the majority of the population of Wales live within the coastal zone, resulting in a range of pressures. The territorial sea of Wales extends to a distance of 12 nautical miles from baselines. Many coastal and maritime issues cut across the responsibilities of more than one organisation which can make it difficult sometimes to achieve a fully co-ordinated approach to issues.

The Wales Coastal and Maritime Partnership (WCMP), established in 2002 is a non-statutory advisory group that brings together all those with an interest in the marine and coastal environment of Wales. The partnership comprises representatives from the public, private and voluntary sectors.

The aim of the partnership is to provide integrated and co-ordinated advice to Welsh Government on sustainable development issues affecting the coast and seas of Wales. The partnership encourages the integration of interests to achieve common objectives to create a cleaner and healthier marine environment for Wales. The funding partners are: Welsh Government, Environment Agency Wales, Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water and Countryside Council for Wales.
